Post-bariatric surgery, also known as body contouring, requires close collaboration among a team of doctors such as bariatric surgeons, medical doctors, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, and nutritionists. Referrals to Dr. Dickinson’s office occur through other physicians, prior patients, or through our website. Once you have consulted with Dr. Dickinson, he will work with your bariatric surgeons and physicians to facilitate having your operation done in Newport Beach.
Post-bariatric surgery can be rewarding for both the physician and patient. In fact, I find that the relationships that develop can be exceptionally rewarding since the physician and patient undergo many procedures together.
You may be a candidate for post bariatric surgery if you have had one of those operations, have lost a significant amount of weight, and now have stable weight. Post-bariatric or post massive weight loss surgery can be a significant metabolic challenge to the body. It is important that the plastic surgeon works closely with the bariatric surgeon as well as your medical doctor to ensure that you are ready for this series of operations.
Some patients who undergo post-bariatric body contouring procedures have multiple procedures and others have fewer. What frequently determines which and how many procedures a patient has depends on 1) symptoms or 2) physical areas that may bother the patient aesthetically.
Removing the overhanging abdominal pannus or reducing the size of pendulous breasts that cause identifiable medical signs and symptoms may be partially covered by insurance companies. Loose skin around the arms or in the medial thighs are less likely to be covered by insurance. Excess skin in the neck or jowls of the face are corrected only by a facelift and are not covered by insurance.
Recovery after panniculectomy or abdominoplasty usually takes about 4-6 weeks before returning to exercise. Drains are often used for a short time post surgery.
