Breast augmentation is a common procedure. There are several different implant options for implant dimensions. One of the most common measurements we use when placing breast implants is the base diameter of the breast. This is a measurement from the medial aspect of the breast where the breast begins to the lateral aspect of the breast where it ends. This measurement is often taken at the location of the nipple in patients who are non-ptotic. This base diameter measurement serves as a starting point for selecting an implant. In patients with a narrower breast, we might select a breast implant with a slightly wider base. In patients with a wider breast, we might select an implant that is less wide and has more projection. In general, projection is often a desired characteristic of an implant. In the Allergan implant brands, there is a low profile, a moderate profile, a full profile, and an extra full profile. Each profile has specific advantages.
